Unhappy Jan

I've been visiting Sark since 1980 when I worked for the summer season at Beauvoir Guest House, followed by a further 4 seasons working and, since then, regular visits as a 'grockle'. Like me, my own children now also love the island, and the reason for this is Sark's unique character and charm and the fact that you an escape from the stresses of 21st century life there. I am so sad to see what is happening to the island at the moment and I hope that recent actions by the Barclays will make any supporters they may have had on the island see them for what they really are. They certainly don't care about you. Brecqhou was never going to be big enough for them and sadly my fear for the future of Sark is that it will become their own private island - no more tourists, just their private guests and very few islanders apart from those who choose to become their servants in one way or another, and maybe a new gothic monstrosity, perhaps replacing the Seigneurie?

Sark didn't need democracy (don't get me wrong, I am a total believer in democaracy, but what Sark had was perfect for Sark and didn't need to be mended by some meddling brothers who bought into a system and then immediately set about forcing it to change to meet their own desires) and it certainly doesn't need the Barclays version of democracy where money alone provides power.

People of Sark - you must unite against this invasion before it is too late.

A lover of the old Sark

Default seasons greetings

Hi
I agree with Jan's comments. I have been coming to Sark for many years now and will be there in April 2009. The Island is so special to me and to my wife when she was alive.

It seems the islanders were given the chance to vote and they did so. The Barclays' response to the vote seemed childish (from an outsiders perspective) and from recent news reports it seems they are reconsidering their attitude to what has happened. About time!

I scattered my wife's ashes in the valley overlooking the Gouliot headland as the view, especially in summer, is fantastic. If she were alive today she would not be surprised or amused by all of this.

Unhappy So sad!

Hello Sark inhabitants and lovers!
It will soon be our fifth visit to Sark. We deeply regret what is happening on Sark at the moment.
Sark is really a special place which helps us coming back to our roots whenever it is necessary. It has to remain so.
Hopefully people will realize Sark is a place where they still have the luck to avoid the riffling and useless activities that caracterize modern life.
Please resist and keep Sark genuine.
Warmest regards from France.
